SQ FT BUILT
ONE
PROCESS
FOUR FIRMS. FOUR GOALS. ONE CHURCH CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE.
The standard way to build a church facility hasn't changed in fifty years. Four firms, four contracts, four sets of incentives — and none of them in the room together when the decisions that matter most get made.
Mistake #1
The Unfunded Design
A beautiful set of plans the church can't afford to build. The architect gets paid. The project dies. The church loses six months and a hundred thousand dollars before anyone admits the math never worked.
Mistake #2
The Wrong Building Built Right
A facility that looks good on paper but doesn't actually serve the ministry. Kids' wing on the wrong end. Nursery the wrong size. By the time anyone realizes, the concrete is poured.
Mistake #3
The Build That Splits the Church
A project the leadership couldn't align on. Half the elders wanted to build big. Half wanted to wait. The pastor pushed it through anyway — and the building goes up, but the unity comes down.
Brown was founded to make this entire process work differently. Everything below is how.
ONE TEAM. ONE TABLE.
ONE PLAN.
We function like the Mayo Clinic for churches — with all the experts who need to be involved at the same table from the very beginning. That's what makes our outcomes different.
STRATEGY
Diagnoses what your ministry actually needs the building to do. Walks the facility, interviews the staff, reads the numbers, and tells the church what's really going on — sometimes that's not what the church came in believing.
ARCHITECTURE
Designs to the strategy — not to the wish list. Sizes every space in balance, so the building doesn't fall to its weakest room. Holds the long-range plan, so phase one doesn't box phase two in.
FUNDING
Models real capacity before the design is locked, so the budget and the plan never come apart. Runs feasibility on the campaign before the church commits a dollar. Surfaces the financial truth early, while it's still cheap to act on.
CONSTRUCTION
At the table from day one, pricing the design in real time — not surprising the church with the number at the end. When it's time to build, the same firm that diagnosed it builds it. Superintendent on site. No handoffs.
EVERY CHURCH BULDING IS EITHER DUMB OR SMART.
After sixty years and more than two million square feet, we can walk into a church and tell you within an hour what's working and what isn't. Not because we're guessing — because we've named the patterns. Every building we evaluate falls into one of two categories.
A DUMB BUILDING IS
DUMB
THE DIAGNOSIS OF A BUILDING THAT'S WORKING AGAINST THE MINISTRY
D
DISPROPORTIONATE
Spaces out of balance — a sanctuary too big for the kids' wing, or a worship space the ministry can't fill. The building falls to its weakest room.
U
UNCLEAR
Confused circulation. A door to nowhere. Visitors who can't find the nursery. The building doesn't tell a first-time guest how to use it.
M
MISALIGNED
The right rooms in the wrong relationship. Kids on a different floor from parents. Offices next to weekend traffic. The plan doesn't match the ministry's flow.
B
BLOATED
Spent on the wrong things. A luxury lobby before there's enough nursery space. Stewardship lost to vanity instead of mission.
A SMART BUILDING IS
THE STANDARD FOR A BUILDING THAT SERVES THE MINSITRY
SMART
S
STRATEGIC
Every square foot serves the ministry's actual mission, not its wish list. The building was designed to do a job, and you can name the job.
M
MEASURED
Sized to real capacity — not aspirational attendance. The plan respects the math: a sanctuary feels full at 80% of code, not 100%.
A
ACCESSIBLE
A first-time guest can find every space they need without asking. The building communicates clearly to people who have never been here before.
R
RELATIONAL
Built around how people actually use the church, not how the architect drew it. Adjacencies serve ministry, not aesthetics.
T
TIMED
The right thing built at the right phase — not everything at once. Phase one earns phase two; phase two doesn't fight phase three.
Most churches that hire us don't realize they've described a DUMB building to us in the first ten minutes of the conversation. The job is to get to SMART before anyone signs anything.
A BUILDING DECISION
MADE IN ISOLATION IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE DECISION YOU CAN MAKE.
Most churches think of a building project as one project. We don't. We think in phases because the building you put up first will either make or break every building decision you make for the next thirty years.
PLANNED ACROSS THIRTY YEARS
DEMOGRAPHIC PROJECTION
Who's coming, in what numbers, in what age mix — five, ten, and twenty years out. A church of 140 today has roughly 100 adults, 25 children, 15 students. We design the future against those proportions, not against today's headcount.
SITE PLAN
The full long-range layout of your campus, holding space for future phases before the first phase locks them out. The cautionary tale we tell most often is a church that built a beautiful sanctuary on the wrong corner of their site, and then had nowhere to put the children's wing the ministry actually needed.
AFFORDABLE PHASING
What gets built first, what waits, what's protected — sequenced so each phase pays for the next instead of fighting it. The order of operations matters as much as the buildings themselves.
A church that builds without a master plan spends the next twenty years working around the decisions today's project locked in.
We make sure that never happens to YOU.
DISCOVER > DESIGN > FUND > BUILD
Here's what actually happens inside each step of our process — and what you walk out of every phase holding in your hands.
STEP 01
DISCOVER
DIAGNOSE THE REAL PROBLEM — BEFORE ANYONE REACHES FOR A SOLUTION.
The Discover phase is where we run the diagnostic. We sit with your leadership, walk your facility, interview your staff, read your numbers, and tell you what we see. Some of what we tell you will be hard to hear. All of it is honest.

This is also where we say something almost no other firm will: sometimes, the answer is don't build yet. Half of the projects that fail in this industry fail because they should never have started.
WHAT YOU WALK OUT WITH
-
A clear read on what your ministry actually needs the facility to do
-
A capacity analysis: what you can afford and what you can support
-
A strategic recommendation — including, sometimes, "don't build yet"
-
Language your board can rally around — not a wish list to argue over
STEP 02
DESIGN
DESIGN A BUILDING THAT SERVES THE MINISTRY.

Once the diagnosis is clear, our architects go to work. The first thing they do is design a building that actually serves your ministry — shaped by what we found in Discovery, sized to how your church really grows.
The design that comes out of this phase is one that funding can carry and construction can build, because both of them have been at the table the whole time.
WHAT YOU WALK OUT WITH
-
A master plan that holds the long-range vision across phases
-
A first-phase design sized to real capacity, not aspirational attendance
-
Renderings and visuals you can use with the board and the congregation
-
A facility you'll still be glad you built in twenty years
STEP 03
FUND
KNOW WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD BEFORE YOU NEED TO.
Funding sits at the table from the first conversation, not at the end. That means by the time the design is final, we already know the budget supports it, the campaign feasibility supports it, and the cash flow supports it.
No surprises. No designs the church can't pay for. No campaign launched against a number that was never going to land.
WHAT YOU WALK OUT WITH
-
Capital campaign feasibility, run before the campaign is launched
-
Renderings and tools for the campaign — produced in-house, not outsourced
-
A cash-flow plan that doesn't put the church at financial risk
-
A board that understands and can defend the numbers
STEP 04
BUILD
THE SAME TEAM THAT DIAGNOSED IT, BUILDS IT.

The construction phase is led by the same Brown team that's been at the table since day one — not a separate contractor learning the project for the first time. Our superintendent relocates to your site for the duration of the build.

There are no handoffs, no finger-pointing, no version of "that wasn't in the plans we got." If something needs to change in the field, the people who designed it and the people who funded it are one phone call away — because they all work here.
WHAT YOU WALK OUT WITH
-
A guaranteed price before construction begins
-
Superintendent on-site for the full duration of the build
-
A facility delivered on time, on budget, and on mission
-
A church that finished the project still trusting each other
